"Although Mad ch is in some senses an international figure he is hardly known in England - a fact that reflects probably more on England than on Mad ch." (George Szirtes, the translator of the poem) This directory contains pictures of Mih ly Zichy. These pictures are made as illustrations for Imre Mad ch's poem, The Tragedy of Man. "The Tragedy of Man" is a poem about the first couple Adam and Eve. But the story is not about them. It is the story of the humankind and it is trying to give answers to some of the major questions of human existence. The poem contains 15 scenes. I had time (and patience) to type six (6) of the 15 scenes. The scenes represent the Human History from the ancient Egypt to the future, via Rome, the classic era of Capitalism and the Phalanstery. The first 5 scenes can be found in "tragedy.txt". The 13th scene is in "scene13.txt". You can find info about Mih ly Zichy in "zichytxt.doc". The photo of the poet (Imre Mad ch) is "madach.jpg". It is a photo and not made by Mih ly Zichy. But it does belong here. If you like the poem there is a book available with the full poem. Also I will try to scan the rest of scenes. It takes time. The story of 15 scenes are happening in the following places: Scene 1 : In heaven Scene 2 : Paradise Scene 3 : Outside Eden Scene 4 : In Egypt (Adam as Faraoah, Lucifer as his minister) Scene 5 : Athens (Adam as general Militades) Scene 6 : Rome (Adam: Sergiolus, Lucifer: Milo) Scene 7 : Constantinople (Adam as Tancred, Lucifer is his esquire) Scene 8 : In Prague (Adam as Kepler) Scene 9 : Paris, during the revolution (Adam as Danton) Scene 10: In Prague again (Adam as Kepler) Scene 11: London (Adam as man of mature years) Scene 12: Phalanstery Scene 13: In space Scene 14: A barren, mountanious landscape, covered in snow and ice Scene 15: Same place as in Scene 3 The name of pictures indicates which scene do they belong to. Zichy made pictures not for all scenes and he made more than 1 picture to some scenes. For example: scene11.jpg means the first picture of scene 1. Scene151 means 1st picture of scene15, scene152 means the 2nd picture of scene 15. Some quotas and descriptions: Scene1.jpg: The Lord: "Out of my sight, you spirit of sedition!" Scene21.jpg: Lucifer: "I long for conflict and for strife" Scene42.jpg: Lucifer: "A thousand years, your pyramids are buried" Scene63.jpg: St. Peter: "So let it be your aim: to God the Glory, To you the labour. The single soul is free To bring to fullness all that lies within it. And only one commandment binds it: Love" Scene152.jpg: The lord: "Man, I have spoken: strive on, trust, have faith. -----------------------------
